MagSafe Battery Pack automatically charging iPhone to 100% after unplugging from a charger.

If I charge my MagSafe Battery Pack separately from my iPhone and then put it on my phone, it works as intended. It keeps my iPhone’s battery charged to 90% and extends my battery life substantially. But I would like to just leave it on all the time as a battery extender and simply charge both my iPhone battery and the battery pack together by plugging a charger up to the battery while it’s on the phone. I used to do this in late 2021 after I purchased my first MagSafe Battery Pack and it worked flawlessly. But for the last year or so, every time I unplug the phone and battery pack from any charger, the battery pack automatically charges the phone to 100%, which wastes power, reduces my overall battery life, and degrades my iPhone’s battery health. This option is not toggled on in my low power settings, and the only way I can stop the battery from charging to 100% is by removing the battery pack and placing it back on my iPhone. Is this a bug that has come up in newer iOS versions and could Apple please address it so the MagSafe Battery Pack works like it was supposed to?

Thanks for that info and for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If we understand correctly, you are having an issue with your MagSafe Battery Pack and iPhone. First, let's check if Optimized Battery Charging is not enabled, as that could explain some of the behavior you are seeing. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and see if Optimized Battery Charging is not on and here is more info: About Optimized Battery Charging on your iPhone - Apple Support

Next, let's make sure the firmware of your MagSafe Battery Pack is current by following these steps:

"The firmware update begins automatically after you attach your battery pack to your iPhone. The firmware update can take about one week.

To update the firmware using a Mac or an iPad model with a USB-C port, detach the battery pack from your iPhone, plug one end of a Lightning to USB cable into the Lightning connector on your battery pack, and the other end into your Mac or iPad. The firmware update will take about 5 minutes.

You can check that the update is complete on your iPhone in Settings > General > About > MagSafe Battery Pack. The Firmware Version will be 2.7. "

Thanks, but this isn’t helpful. I’m on the latest iOS and my MagSafe battery pack has the latest firmware update. This feature is completely unrelated to the optimized charging setting in iOS (which I have enabled). I’ve tried multiple battery packs on multiple iPhones and all have the same result. If you attach the battery pack to the iPhone after unplugging both from the charger, it works fine and does not charge the internal battery past 90%, as designed. However if you leave the battery pack on the phone while you use a lightning cable to charge both batteries, when you unplug it the battery pack forgets to limit charging to 90%. This was not the case when the battery pack became available in late 2021 - at that time it worked flawlessly. I’m confident this is a software bug that needs to be addressed by Apple’s software engineers.
