Download pictures from iCloud to Mac but missing meta Data

Hi there,

when I am downloading pictures from iCloud to my MacBook I seem to be losing all the meta data like original creation date, location, etc. I have ticked all boxes, i.e. selected to download the unmodified original, not the most compatible. The creation date will become the current date, i.e. the one of the download. How can I download a large number of pictures from iCloud without losing this critical information?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 13.3

Yes, thats what I am doing (as well). However, when I copy/extract pictures from the photos app to another (external) drive, I have the same result, i.e. no meta data.

Ultimately, I would like to move my pictures that are on iCloud -> external PC HD = best quality and all meta data. Would that be possible?

From my research Apple does NOT allow the meta data to be transferred. Only way to is to handwrite the data and document outside apple. I've asked customer support and visited apple stores. Not only are most clueless why it's critical to some but they pretty much just end with "I cannot help you with that".

If you use the info command on a file in finder, do you not see the photo metadata? I've exported both unmodified originals and just dragged a file from photos to finder and the metadata is retained.
