SSD Renaming itself

I just updated to Ventura 13.3.1 - My SanDisk external SSD renames itself every time it is ejected and plugged back in. For example, "Terra" becomes "Terra 1", "Terra 2", "Terra 3" etc... It only resets to it's correct name on a reboot. For some reason the USB controller is not really ejecting but just adding drives. How do I fix this bug, it's a PITA! Thanks, F

A simple solution when external SSD (Samsung T7, Sandisk Extreme, Crucial X8) is not detected by MacBook/iMac after removal Just to share a very simple solution to a problem I experienced with SSD hard drives (exFAT formatted) I have (Samsung T7, Sandisk Extreme, Crucial X8) when are removed without properly ejecting them (always avoid disconnecting any external drive without ejecting them from the system). The warning message about that action appears as usual. Then, when connecting again the hard drive to the same or any other mac computer, the SSD is not appearing nor recognized (I tried with the ones I have, macbook pro 2021, macbook 2016, and iMac 2019, all with different OS, and also restarting the systems with or without the SSD connected). When connected to any windows PC, the SSD is detected again and files are all accessible, but the warning about the need to repair appears, and after running the fix recommended, it says it is not possible to repair. After ejecting the hard drive from windows and connecting it again to a mac, still not detected. BUT if you connect the SSD to any computer running Linux (i.e. Ubuntu or Mint), it is immediately recognized and accessible without a warning, and the index file repaired. Now, eject it from the linux computer (removing the drive from the system and then disconnecting it), and now it will be recognized again without any problem by any mac computer :-) Anyone has a better option for this problem only with the mac? (not needing the use of another OS?)

Why am I unable to repair an external SSD in disk utility after improper ejection? There is a problem I come accross whenever an external SSD is not ejected from within Mac OS. The SSD does not appear in finder but it does appear in disk utility, however, it isn't possible to fix the drive even with disk utility/first aid, trying to fix just leads to errors. The only way to solve it is to use a Windows machine to scan and repair the drive. Basically I just want to know why this happens. Luckily for me I own both Windows and Mac machines so in my case it is a minor inconvenience, but what about those who soley use Mac, how do they solve this issue? The drives don't need to be reformatted nor are they corrupt, it seems to be a compatibility thing as I also have an external NVME drive which isn't affected. My devices: Samsung T5 & T7 Portable SSD's - exFat file system 2016 Intel MacBook - Monterey 2020 M1 Mac mini - Monterey 2019 iPad Pro - iOS 15

How to rename a device (not the partition) in Mac OS Ventura Disk utility in Ventura seems to only rename a hard drive partition even when only the device name (farthest left, not indented name) is selected and Erase is invoked. In Disk Utility, there is a device named "miniStac k Classic Media" with a space between the c and k that I want to remove. I selected that device in Disk Utility (I had selected View/Show All Devices) and selected "Erase" then Name: 'DiskA_1TB', Format: 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)', Scheme: 'GUID Partition Map' with no extra security options. After the Erase is complete, the "miniStac k Classic Media" device name remains and indented under it in the External devices and volumes list there is a partition name of "DiskA_1TB". I have searched and can't find any reference to changing the device name that works with Ventura 13.2.1. How can I rename the device (not the partition) in Mac OS Ventura?

Volumes isn't hidden, it's just listed as Go > Computer.

Your problem normally is caused by a failed eject and the mount point remains as a folder.

With the drive disconnected, if you Go > Computer and you see a folder with the name of the drive, delete the folder.

What did you set to Read Only?

I found a solution that works. I located the hidden "Volumes" folder with OmniDiskSweeper and changed the permissions to read-only. Now, when the SSD disconnects and reconnects, it no longer creates new names such as "SSD1," "SSD2," etc. Due to the battery drain issue with Sonoma, which reduces battery life by an additional 30-40%, I preferred to find a solution to stick with Ventura and resolve this bug.
