The following disk images cannot be opened: Illegal search

I am updating from OS X 10.10 to 10.11 on my old Mac. But when I open the *.dmg file downloaded from How to download macOS - Apple Support , this happened:

It means 'The following disk images cannot be opened: Illegal search' in English.

What should I do to update successfully?

Earlier Mac models

Hey there biggy50,

We'd like to help rule out some possible causes, along with learning more about what's happening:

  1. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart, but has one been already tried for your Mac since seeing that error message?
  2. It's always recommended to keep up to date, even if you plan on upgrading to a different macOS version. You mentioned that OS X 10.10 is installed, but the latest version is OS X 10.10.5. Is this the version currently installed? You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’.
  3. Have you already tried deleting that .dmg file, then downloading it again to test for the same issue?
  4. Have you already confirmed that your specific Mac model is indeed compatible with OS X 10.11? This link will not only help you identify the model, but it'll also list the latest compatible OS version for your specific Mac: Identify your iMac model

Cheers!
