I want to use an old Apple TV unit with an old pal tv. The unit turns on but I can't work out how to connect it to wifi

I've got an old Apple TV unit and figure I might use it with my old PAL TV. I've connected them up but can't seem to get anything happening after the TV shows the message AirPlay, connect to wifi network, connect Apple TV. The remote doesn't seem to talk to the Apple TV, and when I plug the Apple TV into my macbook it doesn't show up. (I was going to try to reset it).

Is it dead, do I give up?
