Dock a split keyboard

I just upgraded from an iPad Air to a 9th gen iPad. I’ve been using the keyboard split and docked for quite sometime. It accidentally undocked, and now it won’t completely dock while split. I know about holding the keyboard button itself, but the only options now are merge, dock and merge, and float. None of those are options I am looking for. It was docked and split just fine up until it accidentally floated. It refuses to stay split while docked, and will automatically merge when I try to dock it while split in landscape mode. On iPadOS 16.4.1.

Clearly you are aware of the keyboard-key at bottom-right of the keyboard - and how to use it.

To resolve your issue, begin by selecting Dock & Merge. The objective is to begin with the full keyboard docked to the bottom of the screen.

You will now have the full on-screen keyboard visible on the screen - and this will be anchored to the bottom of the screen. From here you can again split the keyboard…

Don’t use the keyboard-key to invoke the split.

Instead, simultaneously place two fingers on the keyboard (keys “f” and “j” are ideal) - and pause - before moving your fingers outwards towards the left and right sides of the screen. Your on-screen keyboard should split - and remain docked to the bottom of the screen.

From split-keyboard, you can return to a full keyboard using the keyboard-key - or, by using two fingers; place one finger on each keyboard segment, then slide your fingers together.

This unfortunately didn’t work. When I did as you recommended, the keyboard simply became unresponsive, with the letters on the keys turning blank until I let go. What barely worked was first splitting, then quickly tap and holding the keyboard button, then immediately dragging it down to the bottom, bringing the keyboard down while split, then holding it for a few seconds before letting go. This allows it to stay split and docked, although it undocks immediately after you end your sentence with a period. I’m dumbfounded, as this wasn’t an issue at all in the past. Is this a feature that was removed and I’m just unaware of this change?
