MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) "full disk" even if I keep deleting files... Please help :-(

Hello,

Firstly, many thanks to whoever reads this and dedicates some time to help out a total novice... I have scanned through the blogs and questions but can't seem to find a solution.

I have an old(er) Macbook Pro Retina 13-inch circa 2015 running 10.11.6. Up until three days ago it worked relatively well, no complaints. Since then I'm unable to donwload a file from Safari, transfer any kind of file from external hard drives etc... When transfering a file I get "The operation can't be completed because the disk is full" and whatever file I try to download from Safari or Chrome (even Clean My Mac dmg etc) just get stuck and make the browser crash. To be fair, I have hundreds of thousands of pictures in the Photos library but apart from that no huge files that I could easily delete from the Mac. I have since then transfered around 60GB of pictures from Photos to an external drive and deleted them from my computer but even if the added "free space" seems to show in Finder, I still can't copy or download any new file (even smaller ones) and the Mac is very slow at startup (and when running more than one app at a time, Microsoft Word takes a long time to open, for instance). Very small Word files still seem to work, but noghting bigger than a couple MB. I've restarted it many many times, the "free" hard drive space shows up (around 62 GB) but also fluctuates rapidly (suddenly 40GB or 15GB then back to 62) but still I can't add new files to the Mac.

Any ideas? Please help, I use it mostly for Mail & browsers but I do use my Photos app religioulsy (739GB!). Could I move the Photos library to an external hard drive and use it that way, like I've been doing for years with my iTunes library, for instance? And why don't the deleted files make a dent on the hard drive?

Thank you! Have a nice day!

First, your issue saved you from making the problem worse since it prevented you from installing CleanMyMac. CMM is notorious on these forums for causing all sorts of problems. Anti-virus apps, cleaning/optimizer apps, and third party security software are not needed on a Mac. These types of apps usually causes more problems than they solve as they interfere with the normal operation of macOS.

Try booting into Safe Mode to see if things are better. If so, then it means you most likely have some third party software installed which is interfering with the normal operation of macOS. Run EtreCheck and post the report here so we can see if anything stands out in the report. If you cannot download it to the main drive, then try downloading it to a USB drive or USB stick....or download it using another computer and place it on a USB drive/stick. You can launch EtreCheck from the external drive.

I forgot that the system requirements for EtreCheck recently changed to a minimum of 10.13, sorry about that.

Your 2015 laptop is able to run up to macOS 12.x Monterey. Unfortunately Apple's software update feature doesn't always take into account older systems which cannot run the latest version of macOS.

You can find links for various older macOS installers here:

How to download macOS - Apple Support

If you cannot download files, then you will need access to another Mac compatible with the OS you are trying to download. You can use the information in the following article to identify which versions of macOS are compatible with various Apple hardware. Generally you will need a Mac from Late 2009 to 2018.

macOS 10.15+ no longer supports 32 bit apps, so you will need to install the 64 bit versions or find another app to do the job.

32-bit app compatibility with macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 and later - Apple Support

Since you are having issues with the current installation of 10.11 and some of your third party apps may not be compatible with later versions of macOS, I would recommend you take this opportunity for a clean install of macOS by booting into a macOS 10.13 USB installer, erasing the whole physical SSD as GUID partition and MacOS Extended (Journaled). Within Disk Utility you may need to click "View" and select "Show All Devices" so that the physical SSD appears on the left pane of Disk Utility. You will need to install macOS 10.13 first in order to upgrade the system firmware so it can recognize an APFS volume needed by later versions of macOS.

Of course you can try installing macOS 10.13 over top of your current 10.11 installation to see what happens, but you may need to do this while booted into Safe Mode.
