Photos Library Saved to Hard Drive, Not Recognized after Mac Update

My mac was running out of storage with all the photos and videos saved. I moved the photos app onto a hard drive, which I needed to plug in every time I wanted to access the photos app. Was totally fine until... After one of the new OS updates, the hard drive is not recognized anymore! Now I cannot access the photos app or any of my saved pictures and videos from the drive! I tried to move the photos library back onto my mac, but it won't open and is greyed out. How can I get my photos library back onto my mac from the hard drive?

It might be caused by format incompatibility, permission errors, or database corruption after the macOS update. Try following fixes:

1. Check drive format. Must be APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Verify in Disk Utility.

2. Repair library. Hold Cmd+Option while opening Photos to trigger repair.

3. Fix permissions. Right-click drive > Get Info (Cmd+I) > Enable "Ignore Ownership" if available.

4. Manual recovery. Right-click .photoslibrary > Show Package Contents > Copy Originals/ folder to backup photos.

If the drive is physically damaged, use tools like Disk Drill for recovery. Always backup your library via Time Machine. And use APFS for SSDs, Mac OS Extended for HDDs. Always eject properly.

It sounds like your external Library might not be formatted properly.  To avoid damaging the Photos Library an external drive must be formatted in either APFS format or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. Additionally, the drive can not have had Time Machine on it since it was formatted. There have been so many problems with using incompatible drives that the newest macOSs won't even allow a Library on a non-Mac formatted drive to open, since there is a chance of damaging the Photos database. See this:

If this drive is in a an incompatible format, stop running Photos with it immediately!  A Photos Library can sit on an incompatible drive, but running it may corrupt the database.

I'm not sure why the Library is grayed out. Even improperly formatted drives can usually give Finder access. Use the app Disk Utility to help analyze the drive. Do you have a backup copy of the Library??

If you're sure your drive is properly formatted in APFS, for example, you might also need to check the permissions for your drive.  This is not usually a problem, but it sometimes comes up.  Click on the drive icon, and open the Info window with command. Go to the bottom:

Click on the drive icon, and open the Info window with command-i. Go to the bottom:

If “Ignore Ownership” is there, then it should be checked.
