Default Apps Pane in ventura 13.3.1

When I click on "Default Apps" in System Settings I get a message:

"Settings Error

Could not load Default Apps settings pane"

No information, just an OK button.

Two questions:

1 Can this be fixed by me?

2 Is there another way to set certain file extensions to be opened by a different program from the current default?

Mac mini, macOS 13.3

FWIW, the way you normally set which apps open certain files is to select a file, press command i, or choose "Get Info" from the File Menu, or control click on a file and choose Get Info, then select an app from the "Open with:" drop down menu, then click "Change All…"

I'm wondering if Default Apps (which was in System Preferences in my previous computer) was picked up in the Time machine backup I used on the new machine. I did notice a couple of other panes for programs I don't have on the new computer, such as MacFUSE.

Any way, I see that if you right-click on any .jpg file and choose Get Info you can set the behaviour there. So query closed I think!

Maybe you can say more...
