mail not responding on imac
Can't open the mail application on my imac. Any ideas?
Operating system is old: El Capitan 10.11.6 but this has happened suddenly.
Just doesn't respond.
Mail works on my laptop.
iMac 21.5″, OS X 10.11

Oh well -- I just followed the obvious thing, restart, and this time Mail opened. I didn't do that before because Mail stopped working just after I started up the machine from a wee rest. But I should have just done that first.
Have faith, o ye of little. Close everything. Start again.
Thank you Mac.

Using the same credentials n a Browser can you log into your WebMail?
Empathy. You can, however, hang onto your old Mac with its old operating system, and log into iCloud emails online, or Googlemail or whatever you use. Or at least you should be able to.
It is infuriating when you're forced to upgrade, even when nothing is broken, except the things the upgrade has stopped working.
I have this problem too.
I forgot my google password; changed it.
Now using my Dec 2010 iMac
I can't use the MAIL icon to access my gmail account. I can't enter the new password for google; I get an error message.
It's a wonderful computer. I really want to restore this feature.

I'm not sure I quite understand the problem.
Do you mean that when you open the Mail application, you're unable to download messages from gmail, although you used to be able to?
You should still be able to access your gmail account online, though Mail should also be able to download the messages for you onto your desktop, if you've already told it to.
But if it's not working, maybe set it up again. Instructions here: at https://www.lifewire.com/set-up-gmail-account-with-macs-mail-application-2260069
I get an error message. I've googled it.
It's because my iMac is old. mid 2010 High Sierra
My version of the operating system is not supported, and I can't upgrade the OS.
Best solution? Buy a new Mac. Except...

I've downloaded a common app to get to my gmail. It works!
I haver so much to learn. Meantime, a while back I did upgrade the iMac and boosted memory to 16 G. That speed it up!
(But of course I think my car is faster when I wash it!) Just laughing at myself.

The App works.
It only imports past and future emails. It doesn't show the folders I created to put emails in.
I'd like to restore those, or restore my apple mail so I get them back!
I have so much to learn. :)

I suspect you have to go back to square one, create those folders all over again and rules to send mail to them. Or put them there manually.
Isn't it nice putting letters into cardboard folders and labelling them neatly? I miss that....
We moved a lot.
Before I was born my Father served with the Royal Navy in the Med. He was in the Canadian Navy.
School...I went to 13 schools in two countries by end of grade 8. Somehow things like letters didn't survive those moves. It sounds nice!

I haven't tried. I can open Mail without problems on my laptop on my iphone, so I can't see webmail helps. Unless you know something I don't know.
I did restart my computer before trying. Thanks for this hint.

Yay! you are a HERO!
You made me smile!
Thanks
