AirPods Mic Quality

Hi!

I recently bought a pair of AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) to use them as a microphone for video making. I use Filmic Pro to record, which has the option to use bluetooth headphones to capture audio. The problem is that the audio quality captured by the AirPods is really bad.

I've read many posts from people complaining about the quality of the AirPods microphones, but after a series of tests I realized that the problem is not the microphones, but a sort of always-on noise cancellation that filters the audio and makes it a lot worse. This noise cancellation has nothing to do with the normal noise cancellation options easily accessible from the settings. In fact, both activating or deactivating the noise cancellation or the transparency mode from the AirPods settings or from the control center does not change anything. It's like a sort of secret voice-filter of the headphones which is always active.

This is demonstrated by the fact that as soon as I open Filmic Pro for a few moments I hear the audio captured from the headphones unprocessed, and it is much better. After a few seconds you hear the background noise reduction filter activating and the audio deteriorates. Of course it's not Filmic Pro's problem because the problem occurs with any other app.

Does anyone know if there is a way to have control of this headphones feature, in order to turn on or turn off this annoying voice filter? Because it's really a pity, since it's a software problem that could therefore be solved with a tap.

A thousand thanks!

Hi Roxainer,

You've done an excellent job at isolating the issue. However, the only features you have control over with the AirPods Pro are the ones listed in the article here: Change the settings of your AirPods and AirPods Pro

Moreover you can test changing the microphone settings to always left or always right if you haven't already. The information for doing that is below and found in the same article.

"Set Microphone to left, right, or automatic

There's a microphone in each AirPod, so you can make phone calls and use Siri. By default, Microphone is set to Automatic, so that either of your AirPods can act as the microphone. If you're using only one AirPod, that AirPod will be the microphone.

You can also set Microphone to Always Left or Always Right. You can also set Microphone to Always Left or Always Right to always have either the right or the left AirPod use the microphone even if you remove it from your ear or put it in the case."

Based on your AirPods Pro model you can also try adjusting the Adaptive Transparency setting. The section "Use Adaptive Transparency with AirPods Pro (2nd generation)" at the bottom of the guide here has more information: Switch between Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode - Apple Support

Feel free to also leave feedback for Apple directly here: Feedback - AirPods - Apple

Cheers.

Hi OrigamiFan1,

Thank you very much for your kind and very rich reply.

Unfortunately I had already tried both with the microphone settings (always left, always right or automatic) and with the various transparency options. It seems that this voice filter that the AirPods activate on the voice captured by the microphones is not accessible from the normal settings.

Because it is quite evident that it is a software effect. In fact, if I try to record myself playing the piano and singing, the system interprets the piano as noise and completely eliminates it, and by doing so it obviously also destroys a good part of the voice.

So I was wondering if there was some way to disable this feature in order to have the audio captured by the microphones without any kind of filtering, noise suppression or software enhancements.

Thanks again for your kindness! Cheers!
