If your iPad is unresponsive, connect your iPad to its Power Adapter and allow the iPad to charge. Then, while still connected to external power, try a forced-restart:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If iPad still doesn’t turn on, or if it gets stuck during start up, see the Apple Support article If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t turn on or is frozen. Or if your iPad isn’t working correctly after you restart it, see the iPad Support website.

Similar thing happened to me. My old iPad worked over 7years and since it became slower, I bought iPad Air 4 WiFi 256GB in Nov 2020. However, just after 3 years, I found the iPad not responding my finger touch. I attempted Force reset and all, visited an Apple Genius Bar. Support person at Apple tried resetting the iPad but this has not fixed the problem. Basically, iPad works with my keyboard, and somewhat with my Apple pen. Using Apple pen is still a pain; Even I don’t touch the screen with the pen but only hovering it closely makes the screen responds. However, it is like touching the selected action continuously, so I cannot even type properly. (1) If this was a known issue how come Apple cannot acknowledge and offer solution? (2) If anything to do for the user is possible, what is it? For example, if the operating temperature for the iPads is 0-35 degrees of Celsius, would the user would make sure to keep it in an air conditioned room in some climates like 35-36 degrees C? Or don’t use (and charge) it in hot weather? (3) Are there any known issues using the pen (and even the keyboard) as an accessory that may cause this issue? I ask this as I started using pen only 2 months ago. (4) Would installing a new SW/ update SW (App or iOS) or using any App cause this issue? All I want is some more clarifications why iPads may have had this issue and if Apple should offer free replacement rather than asking AUD689 for repair swap of the iPads with expired warranty. I never had problems with my old iPad and feel disturbed with my current experience. I always protected my iPad and not sure now if I should just make an effort to pay money to get the repair Swap as Apple support offered. Actually, I am even not sure if Apple (i) will replace my iPad with the refurbished iPad Air 4 rather than a new one (because it is discontinued last year) (ii) will give a 1 year warranty on the replacement iPad! Please advice…

iPad Air 4th Gen. working perfectly until last night. Using the notes app writing a note with Apple Pencil and suddenly screen stopped responding. Wouldn’t work with pencil or touch. Bluetooth keyboard and mouse worked fine. Used the “volume up-down-hold power” for reset, didn’t work. Apple Support line couldn’t do anything and Best Buy staff did a reset with no luck. Now I can’t even log in and use it with mouse and keyboard.

very frustrating to have a $600+ machine fail its primary input method in just 3 years.

reading threads, this seems to be a known issue, but not action.

Same exact thing happened to me last night. Not sure what to do, it wasn't responding to touch but was working with the pencil so after about 20 hard resets I just restored it to factory defaults in one last effort to keep my data. Now it stuck at the 'hello' screen from set up and the pencil nor touch will open it. Extremely frustrating.
