IPhone 14 Pro Max issue with Step counting

I'm having a issue with my I phone 14 Pro Max when trying to use the Health 'step counter' . It seems to be counting maybe 1/4 of all the actual steps walked. I did a test this morning with my older IPhone 7, it counted just over 2000 steps where as the IPhone 14 Pro Max counted 705 over the same distance ! I've run this test over several days and still get inconsistent readings. I've turned it off and on, have the latest IOS update, cell data and wifi both on connected... at a loss here. Any thoughts ?? :-)

Something amiss here.

Are you using any third-party devices to track and record "step counter"?

Are you carrying both iPhone 7 and 14 Pro Max with you while taking a walk?

One of your devices is surely incorrect so I would suggest taking your devices to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider, or contacting Apple Support:

Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support

Get a Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

Contact Genius Bar.

Manage Reservations - My Reservations - Apple

No, I'm not using any third-party apps.

Yes I carried the iPhone 7 with me twice after I noticed the iPhone 14 pro Max was drastically under counting steps. I just checked it again with a manual Pedometer and it is still greatly undercounting steps. You may be correct, I may need to get the phone looked at by Apple.
