Safari pages and mail.app preview pane completely black

Recently, I am having an intermittent problem where individual emails (not all of them, but some) and web pages will fill in completely black. I've changed no settings at all. This is becoming a super annoying problem, it happens enough to totally interrupt work flow. Any suggestions?
