Type of USB port used on MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)

Hello,

I need some advice before buying some third-party kit.

I live in Belgium, which has electronic ID cards (i.e. fitted with a chip). I need to buy an electronic ID card reader to connect my ID card to my MacBook Pro dating from mid-2012. The eID card readers are available with either USB-A or USB-C connections.

The tech specs on my MacBook don't tell me which type of USB port is used, just the speed, i.e. USB 3.

So my question is what type of USB ports are generally used by Apple, and in particular on my Mac book model? If Apple uses USB-C, will I need a USB-C to USB adapter?

Thanks for your advice,

Russ

Apple has used both USB-A and USB-C. It currently uses USB-C on all new MacBooks.

However a 2012 MacBook Pro, would be using USB-A, as USB-C did not exist back then.

You can use a USB-C to USB-A adapter if you choose a USB-C card reader.
