Mounting an external device

My 2017 MacBook Pro Finder does not recognize a SanDisk Professional CFexpress Card Reader that I connected to my laptop.

The computer won't show the empty card reader on the desktop; a card must be in it.

Also, check under Finder > Preferences > General tab and make sure that there is a check mark in the box to show external disks on the desktop.
