Selection issue after "upgrade" to Monterey

Ever since updating to Monterey, I often cannot select, or click, into fields with my touchpad unless the application is maximized. This happens within chrome, microsoft products, and even the operating system itself. For instance, in order to put the computer to sleep from the menu, or use the menu bar for any application from the desktop (not a maximized application window) I have to move my mouse pointer to the VERY top line and click, and then I will be able to move the pointer down, select the apple, and then select the sleep option. In applications like excel I actually cannot click in a cell to activate it, I have to use the arrow keys to navigate around. If I maximize the application it will function normally.

Has anyone else seen this issue?

It is a bit unclear, but it seems that you have selected to hide the menu bar.

Go to System Preferences->Dock & Menu Bar, and make sure that "Automatically show and hide menu bar" is NOT checked. (The wording may not be exact, since I am running Ventura, and things look different, but that is the principle).

In case I misunderstood, please clarify.

No, that's not the issue. I can see the menu bar just fine, it's just that when you select items on it, nothing happens. Or in the case of Excel, when you click on the title bar to select the window, then click on a cell to select the cell, the entire window "de-selects". The same as if you clicked outside of the window. Very strange. It's like the x/y co-ordinates of the track-pad are all messed up.

Thanks for the reminder to try Safe Mode, it did not occur to me to try that. That worked, so I got to looking at the tasks that loaded when my system boots, and I saw one called "Scroll Reverser" that I had installed an operating system or two ago to make things scroll the direction I liked. When I terminated that, everything worked properly, and Monterey is setup to scroll in the direction I prefer without the extra app.

Thanks again!
