after 3 years of disuse i have finally been able to use my mac, but i can't remove bing at all from chrome and safari keeps opening tabs randomly from macpaw and mackeeper. i haven't installed any of these programs and i have tried everything to remove bing from chrome, i have redefined its settings, set google as my default browser, uninstalled any supposedly fishy apps but it keeps happening. what should i do?

Troubleshooting Browser Tabs:

A. Scan your Mac for Malware:

Use MalwareBytes for Mac --- This is software that searches for malware/adware. So, scan with it and then remove what is found. Once removed, uninstall MalwareBytes for Mac. Then restart the Mac.

Downloads:

  1. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac
  2. Malwarebytes Uninstaller

B. Boot in Safe Mode:

In Safe ModeLogin Items do not run at login, certain preferences are set aside, and damaged system files are then reset. So, once booted in to Safe Mode, wait 30 seconds, and then boot up normally, attempting another removal. If that does not work, then attempt removal while in Safe Mode. For instructions, go here: How to Use Safe Mode on your Mac - Apple Support

C. Single-Out this User:

What happens when you create a new Administrator user? Does this all go away? If so, it's an issue within your current user --and not it's the entire macOS.

Trobuleshoitng Opwning Pages:

  • Change the Default Search Engine:

While in Safari, try a different search engine. Maybe changing the Default Search Engine in Safari and Chrome Preferences would fix this.

  • Try a Different Browser:

Google Chrome might make usage of Google go bit faster (Think of it as Google-for-Google).  Mozilla FireFox might be the best bet, being that it is not directly involved with Google, nor Apple, like Chrome and Safari are, respectively.

thank you for the reply. i downloaded malwarebytes, the software recognized the weird stuff, quarantined it and i removed it. safari now works fine but google keeps opening bing, and i forgot to mention that everytime i search something on google, it shows a bsearch.icu/ url and redirects the search to bing.

i also couldn't boot in safe mode but i created a new administrator and google and safari work normally.

do you have an idea of what's happening and what else i should do?

thanks again for the help.
