Why did my iPhone SE go to a black screen?

My iPhone SE went "black", and neither the home button nor the power button would revive it.

I discovered that by pressing the volume up quickly, then pressing the volume down quickly, then hold the power button until Apple logo appears did revive it.

My question is: why (or how) did this happen?
