looking to get back in motion thread with fox_m

I can't seem to make a direct contact to fox_m who gave me some direction on making a rotation earth with text some time ago. I now have time to bite off this project and I got stuck. here is the original discussion and I will add what I can as follows. is there a plugin available for this .mov… - Apple Community

I started to build this motion project per the first reply. I am getting along, but I can't get past this step (step #2) or find out how to do it. Maybe I am missing something.

  1. I dragged the Clone Layer group into the image drop box box and dropped it. I am trying to do this next step and can't seem to find the function.
  2. Go down to Scale and dial down the disclosure triangle. UNCHECK Scale with Font Size and set the Scale to 100%. You should see the Earth — it should look "full" and it should animate when the project is played. It also should look like a sphere and it should look better than the original.

Here is a link to my .motn project. Maybe you can download it and see if there is anything I missed in an earlier step to not get to this one. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sEg081c5E99wIhLjxEinqOv7L-mv5BGK/view?usp=sharing

Thanks everyone for the help.

Ok - I've been going through all of this... I've come across a number of errors (probably my fault)...

Simply:

Earth Model — enclosed in it's own 3D group. Make sure (while building this) the Position is 0,0,0. It will make everything easier to develop 3D "stuff" at center screen - then move things after they're built.

Select the Group and type K to Clone it.

You *should* have a new group containing that Clone. This group needs to be 2D.

Add the Color Solid to this group -- but these are the ONLY items inside this group.

Select the Clone group and type Command-Shift-G to create a group. Switch this group to 3D (this will be the group containing the Text Character '0'

To the '0' character Substance > Generic Surface > Image Source, add the 2D Group containing the Clone Layer.

Dial Down Placement. Dial Down Scale. Unselect Scale with Font Size. *Then* set Scale to 100%.

—————

You had the Earth Model at Transform > Position X: 0.5, Y: -138.

You had the Clone Layer in the same group as the '0' character and you had Properties > Transform > Scale of the Clone layer at 226%.

You had the 0 character at 91.34, -72.47, -12.51 with the Rotation at -18, 173, -10 [It should be all zeros for position and rotation *.]

The technique behind this is something of an optical illusion - the "flat" 0 character with the clone layer texture is only supposed to give the appearance of 3D. Even though the Earth will still "look" 3D - it will, in fact be flat (lol). Rotating it will "destroy" the illusion.

Here's the project you posted - with repairs (to the point you had taken it):
