Troubleshooting Messaging:

When sending a message to only one person, then only they will receive it. You are both probably receiving it because the sender has both numbers (yours and your mom's) in the contact. If that does not seem accurate, then contact your Carrier, as they provide you with the service of Messaging. Something may be misconfigured on your carrier's end.
