Display Issue on iPhone After iOS 16.4.1 Update

After the iOS 16.4.1, the Always on display is turning off by itself after using the “Do not disturb” focus at night.

Since I don’t like the display on during night and it stopped turning the display off during charging, I’ve added a filter to switch AOD when turning on “Do not disturb”.

The problem is that when I wake up and turn off “Do not disturb” the AOD is off on the settings, as if I’ve manually turned it off.

The filter is supposed to work only when the focus is on, right? Not to change the settings..

Hey there FHollister,

We'd like to help by learning more about what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. The first thing we recommend is making sure you're up to date, as the latest version is iOS 16.4.1(a). In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update your iPhone or iPad.
  2. If you already have iOS 16.4.1(a) installed, sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section ‘Restart your Mac' here: Shut down or restart your Mac
  3. If there was a time where Always On enabled itself after using Focus in the past, when did this start to occur?

Cheers!

Hi!

My iPhone is updated with iOS 16.4.1(a).

Let me explain again.

  • Before some update, and I don’t know which one, whenever the iPhone was charging and standing still, the display would turn off, even with the AOD feature on.
  • After some update, the display started to remain on, with the iPhone charging and standing still. I did not change any settings before this started happening.
  • Later, a new update was released allowing to add a “Focus filter”. I don’t how it’s written in English, but translating from Portuguese, it says that Focus filters are TEMPORARY behaviors added when the determined Focus is ON.
  • Since the AOD behavior changed “by itself”, I added a Focus filter to turn off AOD, but as it says on the Focus filters, it is supposed to be temporary (only with Focus on) And it’s not! It is turning AOD off permanently!

A Shortcut is a different thing.

When setting a Focus, we are able to add “Focus filters” that are how the device will behave when this determined Focus is on.

When my Focus “Do not disturb” is on, there’s a “Focus filter” that disable the AOD.

So, if it’s supposed to behave temporarily when DND is on, it’s supposed to get back to its normal setting when it’s turned off.

And this is not happening. After turning DND off, AOD keeps off as well.

Did you manage to resolve this? I have the same issue whereby the focus filter correctly turns the AOD off when it goes into DND at night, but when DND is removed in the morning the AOD remains switched off.

I did notice however that if I manually switch the focus on and off, the AOD filter works as expected. But when DND is activated using the scheduled on and off times, that is when it doesn’t come back on.

It doesn't seem his problem was answered correctly.

I've got the same problem.

On schedule, at midnight, "do not disturb" mode is activated. In this mode I added the feature "desactivate always on display".

The problem is that at 8am, when "do not disturb" is set off it doesn't activate "always on display" back !

The problem is as simple as that. Why should he ask at an Apple Store. It's a iOS problem !

I have what might be the same issue. My Always On Display setting randomly turns itself off, probably overnight, but I don't think it happens every day. I typically get a few days before it happens again, although I will watch more closely.

I did try manually turning DND on and off via Siri while locked and sitting on my desk and it worked as expected turning the display on and off correctly.

Did you ever get any support from Apple or narrow down the problem or find a solution to this?
