So my lock screen changed the color of the text on me.

My lock screen is a picture of my great niece. (I say that so you'll know I'm not using one of the pre-fab lock screens.) It used to show the text (date and time only) in a bright, white font. Now it shows it in a grey font that is extremely difficult for me to read, since the ceiling of the building where the picture was taken is beige.

There has been no update lately. I check this every day or two, since apple (in its infinite wisdom) doesn't update my phone automatically, even though I've set it on auto update. I have an iPhone XS running iOS 16.4.1, which shows that it is up-to-date.

This grey text started last night out of the clear blue sky and it's still going strong 24 hours later. I've tried everything I can think of, including customizing some pre-fab lock screen and notification screen pairs. What I get is that the time is a light grey on light backgrounds and dark grey on dark backgrounds.

Incidentally, if the lock screen shows the date and temperature (example Fri 28 {windy icon} 64o), that's in a contrasting color. But if it shows "Tuesday, January 29" that is the same color as the font with the time. (BTW, my keyboard doesn't have a degree symbol, that's why I used a lower case "o").

How do I get back to a font I can actually SEE for the time of day?

Try this:

  1. Hold down on your lock screen
  2. Press “Customize”
  3. Tap the lock screen
  4. Tap the time
  5. You will see a menu that allows changing time font and color. Choose the color you’d like (you can scroll left and right for more colors).
  6. Tap done
  7. Tap your newly edited lock screen

I hope this helps!

I know it's been a while, and I don't know if you still have this problem, I have just gotten an iPhone 15, and I have faced a similar issue of the iPhone constantly changing the color code to something different right after I set it, a washed version of the original color. However, I think I figured out a solution to my problem, which might be the same as yours.

So after you select a color, there is actually a slider at the bottom (below where you choose the font and size), which modifies the intensity of your color. That modifier seems to apply after you choose your color. It was set by default to the middle for me, which meant that the bright color I selected was automatically half-washed. To fix the issue, I just put that slider to the far right, and then it displayed the pure color that I wanted.

It was really annoying because you expect the color you picked already to be the one displayed, but there is this counter-intuitive modifier that applies after that I didn't notice at first. But yeah, if you still had this issue, I hope this can solve it for you!

I don't have FaceID set up, so I did the second suggestion.

The preview (after tapping "Done", step 6 of the above list) of my new lock screen now shows black text (I changed it) and a different font (I changed that, too). BUT when I tap my newly edited lock screen (step 7), the color goes right back to what it was -- pale grey. The font, however, is changed. Go figure.

Any other suggestions? From anyone? It's kind of frustrating because I can't tell you how many times I look at my phone because I don't wear a watch.

So I found another picture of my great niece and I've been playing with it. Here's what I think is happening.

I have the top line of the text as a widget that shows the date and the wind speed (example: Fri 28 {windy} 18 mph N). This line is the color I chose -- a red to go with the red outfit she's wearing.

The second line has the time. It is in the font I selected. HOWEVER, the color is NOT the color I've chosen. It's a greyed-out color of the one I have chosen. For example, the red I chose (Hex color FF0000, RGB 255,0,0) is now something closer to Hex color 9F5F5F (RBG 159,95,95). Naturally, that color doesn't show up anywhere as what's been chosen for me, so I'm guessing as to the values here, but I can say it is definitely a greyed-out version of the color.

I'm not savvy enough to take a screen shot on my iPhone and put it into my laptop to send it to you. You'll just have to take my word for it.

So, again, I'm stuck with this problem of the greyed-out version of whatever color I've chosen for the time of day and even though this situation is better than black or white, I still have trouble seeing it like I think I ought to. My eyes are getting old. I need CONTRAST!!

If anyone has any suggestions as to how I can get a RED color on the line where the time of day is displayed, please let me know.

In this situation, there are 2 things you can do:

  1. If FaceID is set up, you can look at the screen and it should automatically unlock, allowing you to repeat step 1
  2. If the above doesn’t work, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, type in your passcode, and you should be brought to your Home Screen. Now, swipe down from the top of your screen. You should be brought to your lock screen, and you can repeat the original step 1.

Hope this helps!

For me, it’s a similar issue, not exactly the same, yet just as annoying. So I am using a Mac OS Ventura wallpaper on my iPhone 14 pro running iOS 17. I have set the fonts on the Lock Screen to have the default translucent colour scheme. The problem is that when I press the side button or tap on the screen and it lights up, the colour of the fonts looks kinda washed up or faded and unpleasant. This remains until Face ID recognises me, and unlocks the phone, and that’s when the font colour changes to normal/translucent. I tried using the factory wallpapers like the one that comes with iOS 17, and this issue doesn’t repeat on those wallpapers. I wonder if others are facing the same issue.
