how do I show battery percentage on MacBook air

Select Apple menu -> System Settings -> Control Centre and scroll down to Battery. You see something like this:

Click on Show Percentage, and the percentage is always visible in the menu bar. As I have it, you see the percentage when you click on the battery icon.
