If your iPhone is syncing with iCloud Photos and "Optimize iPhone Storage" is turned on, the photos are in iCloud and just optimized , smaller versions on the iPhone. There is nothing to import from the iPhone. You would just get random results, when importing directly from the iPhone, as only the items that are not optimized could be imported. To get the photos to the Mac, download them from iCloud, where they are, and not from the iPhone.

Either turn on iCloud Photos on the Mac as well, so Photos for Mac can download the photos from iCloud Photos to the Mac, or download them from www.icloud.com using a Browser.

You should not mix two different methods of syncing - either use only iCloud Photos to transfer the photos and videos between your devices, or only use the manual syncing with a cable or Wi-Fi.

At least disable "Optimize iPhone Storage" on your iPhone, so all photos will remain stored locally on your iPhone, or there will not be all photos on your iPhone for the manual download.

But the manual download should not be necessary, if your Mac is also using iCloud Photos. Then all new iCloud Photos should appear automatically on your Mac and all photos from your Mac automatically on your iPhone.

Hi Leonie

Thank you for your time.

I took the photos with my iPhone camera so the pictures are on my phone. I've paid for iCloud storage for almost a year now and I have been importing photos from my phone to my Mac regularly. But now this is the second time this "Optimise iPhone Storage" message has come up and stopped the photos from going from my phone to Apple Photos on my Mac (MacBook Pro).

I think from what you're saying is that I need to turn OFF iCloud storage for my phone AND Mac? So then the photos would load directly into Apple Photos from my phone without interference from iCloud?

I'll look for those settings on my phone and Mac now and see if that helps.

Thank you!

Hi Leonie

Thank you for your time.

"At least disable "Optimize iPhone Storage" on your iPhone" <-- I went in to my phone settings and I cannot find "optimise iPhone Storage" in the settings (so I cannot disable that) . It's an iPhone 8. Fully updated software, but maybe too old for that.

Tried to import photos tonight and again I got the same message about optimised storage not allowing me to import my photos.

I'm just spinning my wheels here.
