My phone storage is full but I have room in my iCloud, why?

Why is my phone storage full when I have lots of room on my iCloud? Everything is set to backup to iCloud

iPhone 12 mini, iOS 16

Okay, I thought so! But then why do I find recommendations that say to back things up to iCloud in order to free up space on my phone? Are those recommendations misleading? I was looking to find out if I was missing something.

Because iCloud storage has nothing to do with the storage on your iPhone.

If your phone storage is full, you need to delete stuff from your iPhone to free up storage.
