Time Machine can't complete backup

In January, I switched from using a back up disk through our network to just an SSD (SanDisk) directly connected to my MackBook Pro (2021, 12.6.2, Apple M1 Max). In February, I connected the drive and successfully complete a backup. Same in March. But now when I connect the drive, Time Machine is telling me, "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to ... The backup disk could not be found. Make sure the backup disk is connected or select a different backup disk." When I look in Disk Utility, I see the SanDisk there. But I am not seeing the SanDisk on the desktop (or Finder) like normal when you connect an external drive. I've restarted the computer. Any ideas? Thanks.

Not sure if this helps, but in normal computer mode, I went into Disk Utility. When I select the SSD, Mount is greyed out. And when I select a volume in the SSD, I get "Could not mount “AppleAPFSMedia”. (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 49218.)

Thank you for the photo.

If you can't Mount a Drive...

Can you use this drive on any other computer, including a PC? If not, I'd say your hard drive has apparently failed. So, get this serviced. Taking it to a retailer, you may be able to get data taken off of it through lab service.

I connected it to a PC and it showed up as a USB drive on the right side of the task bar, but it wasn't visible when I opened the yellow folder. I brought it back home and erased it with my Mac and created a new Time Machine Back Up. Today it seems to be operating as expected. If you have any thoughts, let me know. I'm hoping I don't have to create a brand new back up every couple months. The kind of defeats the purpose of Time Machine.

Formats being the Culprit:

You would need an exFAT format for it to be readable on a Mac and on a PC. Just to be safe, run First Aid once more.

Troubleshooting Drive Inaccessibility:

Three Things to Try...

A. Start with a Restart:

Restart your Mac, and see if it then is fixed.

B. Refresh Finder:

  1. Go To: Apple menu
  2. Select: Force Quit...
  3. Select: Finder
  4. Click: Refresh button

C. Unmount, then Mount the Drive:

Boot into Recovery Mode. (Silicon Chip or Intel Clip): Then, using Disk Utility, see if the Hard Drive is seen. If it is, then see if you need to click the “Mount’ button for it. Try rebooting once more. If of no success, then click unmount button, and then the mount button. Try rebooting once more.

Thanks for the update.

Reply back, letting us know how the connection goes.
