Do you have your contact names synced anywhere? If so you can link that account to the device so they show up in the Contacts app on it.
You can check to see if you've ever synced the contacts through Apple's iCloud service. Go to the iCloud website, sign in to your Apple ID and see if the contact names are showing up under the Contacts section. If they are, you can then sync them to your device by going to Settings and signing in to your Apple ID at the top of the page. Once you're signed in, go to iCloud and turn the Contacts option on.
If you have any third party email accounts, you can go to their sites and see if you have the contact names synced there. If you do, you can set up that email account with the Contacts app on the device to sync them over. Just go to Settings > Contacts > Accounts > Add Account.
