Hey 0806sjx,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. The information below may help with the contacts showing up as the phone number instead of their names.

If you haven't already, restart the iPad by using the steps below or in this article: Restart your iPad. Restarting refreshes the system which may resolve the issue.

How to restart an iPad without a Home button
1. Press and hold either volume button and the top button until the power off slider appears.
2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the top button until you see the Apple logo.

If issue continues and your contacts sync with iCloud, make sure Contacts is enabled by going to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Contacts(you may need to scroll down to locate it). If it isn't on, turn on Photo. If it is on, we ask that you toggle it off for a few seconds and then toggle back on.

If you continue to experience the issue, the steps in this article may help: If your iCloud Contacts, Calendars, or Reminders won’t sync. It has provides steps to take if you're experiencing an issue with contacts not syncing.

If the contacts are associated with a different email address, check out the steps here to ensure Contacts is turned on for that email account: Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone or iPad. Once there, scroll to the section labeled "Turn Contacts on or off for an account".

Take care.
