Does Apple apply the trade in amount ($100) to the purchase price of the phone at the time of purchase or afterwards to your account?

If you are doing the trade in in the store while buying a new one, you will get the amount deducted from the purchase. If you are doing it later or online (that is usually through a third party partnet), it will usually be a gift card for a later purchase.
