How do I get my game contoller to work on my iMac, using Big Sur 11.7.5 OS?

How do I get my game contoller to work on my iMac, using Big Sur 11.7.5 OS? The 360 app no longer works for this OS so although my iMac has paired with the controller it will not connect it therefore no apps can find it. Please help.

First off let me say thank you for your interest & replies, various other forums & sites have tried over the past few weeks have not been so helpful or knowledgable in their replies, when or if they do.

No I am afraid this is not a MS or other makes problem as Apple tells you you can use several controllers with their Apple TV/ Mac & OS & they themselves refer users to download the 360 app I mention to enable MS/Sony & other controllers which you can purchase on their site to work with various Apple devices (my iPhone & iPad still recognise my contollers). I have emailed the author of this app, which he wrote as a service to fellow users, his name is Drew Mills & I share his answer with you.

"Apple now officially supports a number of common controllers on the platform.

Xbox: Connect an Xbox wireless game controller to your Apple device - Apple Support

PlayStation: Connect a PlayStation wireless game controller to your Apple device - Apple Support

The trick with this is that these controllers show up as a totally different interface to what 360Controller did. So depending on what you're using your controller for, some things might not pick it up. In fact, I don't think anything will be able to support older games, now that 360Controller no longer works. It is an unfortunate turn of events."

So I bought a new xbox controller as above & as I described it does not work, I have also spoken to another Mac user whose Sony Controller as mentioned above has stopped working with his Mac.

Unfortunately this is not only older games as suggested by Drew but includes all my games on Steam & the latest Farm & truck sims & games still in Early release. It is no use Apple telling people to download Drew's app, it no longer works with their OS as stated.

I cannot credit that I am the only one (sitting in South Africa) to be raising this issue, although I know Mac is a great machine but not the most popular for gaming.

I accept your point regarding upgrading programmes but have learnt to be wary over the years especially when it comes to OS (Win or Mac) Some convert expensive (very here) hardware & purchased software to junk, also bandwidth is expensive & slow where I live so large downloads have to be considered.

Anyway thanks again & if you hear of any new info that will help please pass it on & I will reciprocate.

Regards, Terry.

P.S. Whoops, another problem we have, our power goes off for up to 10 to 12 hours a day some days & I have just now gone on to battery back up. so must close down in the dark.

To be honest, I believe this is a problem for Microsoft to resolve. It is incumbent upon MS to write code properly for their devices to work on what they consider to be supported systems, and then to update those codes as they continue to support their customers and products. The Mac may recognize the device, but if MS doesn't follow the interface guidance laid out by Apple for accessories, including game controllers, then that would be on them.

Meanwhile, I would advise that you do yourself a favor and upgrade the Mac to the newest OS that it can run. The "damage" done by the upgrade to Big Sur due to the 64-bit code requirement is already done. The newer OS versions will provide enhancements to what you already have, and may in fact fix this particular issue. Big Sur is, after all, two generations behind the current OS.

I will agree that from time to time software issues arise with the installation of OS updates and upgrades. When this happens, patience is required as it takes time to identify and correct these issues. This is exactly the reason for the ongoing updating of every version of any OS since the invention of the computer.

Barring the consequences of advancements like the 32-bit to 64-bit transition of the macOS and the impact of silicon transitions, I do find, generally speaking, that keeping up with the latest updates and upgrades that a machine qualifies for gives the best result for useful longevity of the machines I use.

As I understand that 360Controller is done, the only thing to do is try to work as best we can with the newest software and hardware releases that do come our way from wherever/whomever that may be.

Unfortunately, the path is often littered with the debris of poorly implemented tools and solutions.

I will hope that you can find a positive resolution for this issue soon. 🤞🏽🍀

Meanwhile, I'll leave you with this final link:

Connect a wireless game controller to your Apple device - Apple Support

Per the above...

"Support for specific buttons and features, such as a controller's audio jack or lights, varies by controller and the app you're using with it.

  • Install the latest software updates—both for your Apple device and the controller. If a software (firmware) update is available for the controller, get it from the maker of the controller."

Good luck, my friend. 🙂

I have 2 an xbox 360 wired & now an xbox bluetooth as shown on Apple site. from what I have found out from the author of the 360 app used by these controllers to operate on the Mac (I have used my wired one for a couple of years), from a certain update of Big Sur the 360 app causes core panics under certain conditions & needs a complete re write.

It seems as if either Apple has not noticed this or their site & advice has not been updated, because when I read their ad for controllers on their site I thought that buying one of the Bluetooth ones would solve the problem. however this is not so, my iMac has recognised & paired the device in the normal way, but no games, Steam or controller apps downloaded from the app store will recognise it is it is not connected.

I deliberately have not upgraded Big Sur through the two latest OS available as I lost the use of a lot of 32 bit apps when I upgraded to Big Sur. I do not know if the latest OS Ventura has built in support for controllers & will not try until someone can assure me it has. This seems to be a case of Apple not considering the game controllers when writing their OS? I do not know.
