Apple TV 4 2022 issues on Sony A80K 55”

I am struggling with a couple of things setting up this new TV. Apple tv is connected through port 4, HDMI 2.1. My struggle is how dark the image is and why the sound volume is much quieter. If I flip back and forth between streaming Apple + content from the Apple App off the Sony and then off the Apple TV, the image gets darker and the sound quieter. I have tried with match content on and off. I am reading lots of posts that there is a “dark” issue with APT. Can’t find anything specifically for to determine if I have something wrong. The OLED is already less bright than what I used to so it’s a bummer as it really is dark. Also, my HomePod is my theatre sound device and so the APT is necessary. Not to mention it is where I normally rent my movies etc.

Any insights welcome!

In your Sony settings look in Channels & inputs and check the corresponding HDMI picture setting - your tv will determine what this HDMI port uses.

if you enabled Dolby Vision on your Apple TV it might default to Dolby Dark every time you use the ATV Box. Look in picture settings with your Sony remote to see if there’s another option , which might be Dolby bright or Vivid (too bright). More picture settings are available if Dolby Vision isn’t enabled. The Sony also has the option to auto switch picture settings, which you may or may not not want. Adjust brightness as well and this should save each time you use it.

Do you have this set up for ARC? With HomePods set to default audio on the Apple TV you can use HomePods for all tv audio. For this, you would plug the HDMI cord into the ARC port on the tv. Use HDMI ARC or eARC with your Apple TV 4K - Apple Support

I can’t help with the sound. Mine is much louder using Apple TV. My HomePods are the 2023 model. Except if using the HomePods for regular tv viewing it’s not as loud as tv speakers at low to mid volumes, so I mostly use tv speakers. Full volume on HomePods is much louder but I’m not generally watching tv at full volume!

For the Dolby Vision I had to set this on the Sony HDMI 3(eARC) as well as in Apple TV settings. Today I turned on my tv and the ATV was really dark until I noticed my Sony brightness has changed itself to 2. I use the Dolby Bright which is darker than not using the DV but it’s ok and I just upped the brightness level to 30 and it seems to stick to my preference, apart from today. I don’t have the OLED, I have the x90k. Apple TV is connected by HDMI directly into the tv ARC port. I also enabled ARC in ATV settings (this setting is under the default audio setting).

You might try restarting the Sony tv, ATV and even the HomePods and also unplugging the HDMI cord on both ends and reinserting - test other HDMI cords if you have any.

Thanks. In channels and inputs hdmi 1 is my Bell Fibe box set to standard. HDMI 3(arc) is APTV set to Enhanced. (I also tried it on Dolby . No noticeable difference) The DV Dark and Bright are not options when the APTV is on. Only Standard, Cinema, vivid etc. vivid is a little brighter, but shifts colour. I do get DV Bright/Dark when playing directly off the TV Apple App…but not through APTV. Which seems weird.

Obviously I would prefer to use cinema mode but WAY to dark. And I have read a few more threads here and elsewhere about how dark APTV is. So…

as for the HomePod, I only want it through APTV. I don’t want that sound for regular TV. I just don’t understand why the volume from APTV is also so much lower. With or without the HomePod. That’s the issue. On my last Samsung there was no volume level difference between the set and the ATV. Thanks for trying though. 🙏🏻
