Did you buy your AirPods directly from Apple or a Certified Apple Retailer like BestBuy? If not then there is a strong possibility that your AirPods are counterfeits. I myself have been scammed buying 3rd Generation AirPods, so I would go to this Apple Support webpage that shows how to identify your AirPods.
