Some application files not open when I click on them

Some application files (Excel, Word, PDF files etc) won't open when I click on them, but I can open them if I first start the application and open the file from within the current application.

This only applies to certain files (and possibly also in certain folders), but it seems to be independent of the application and also on which media the files are located.
