If the issues you have described are a direct result of the iOS 16.4.1 update, it is highly likely that a substantial number of users who have performed the software upgrade are encountering a similar problem.

Based on my understanding and experience, it is highly unlikely that iOS updates would introduce issues that affect the day-to-day functioning of the device. iOS updates are typically designed to enhance performance, address security concerns, and introduce new features, rather than causing operational difficulties.

Without a precise understanding of the underlying issue, it may be challenging for forum members to provide targeted solutions to the difficulties you are encountering.

If you are experiencing intermittent silence or drop or the call itself is disconnected during voice calls on your iPhone, there are a few things you can try to fix the issue:

  1. Poor signal strength can cause dropouts or silence during a call. Try moving to an area with better reception or switching to a different network if possible.
  2. Restart your iPhone --> Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
  3. Force Restart your iPhone --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support)
  4. This may help too. Go to Settings > General > Transfer & Reset > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    1. When you reset network settings, previously used networks and VPN settings that weren’t installed by a configuration profile or mobile device management (MDM) are removed. Wi-Fi is turned off and then back on, disconnecting you from any network you’re on. The Wi-Fi and Ask to Join Networks settings remain turned on.
    2. To remove VPN settings installed by a configuration profile, go to Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management, select the configuration profile, then tap Remove Profile. This also removes other settings and accounts provided by the profile. See Install or Remove configuration profiles on iPhone in this guide.
    3. To remove network settings installed by MDM, go to Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management, select the management, then tap Remove Management. This also removes other settings and certificates provided by MDM. See “Mobile device management (MDM)” in the iOS Deployment Reference.
    4. Reset your Network Settings. Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.
  5. Check if there is a software update available for your iPhone. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  6. Check if your audio is not connected to external Bluetooth speakers.
  7. Few other reasons why your device keeps Muting / Dropping / Disconnecting Calls or encountering Call Failed.
    1. Your device's cellular signal Is weak.
    2. It's Raining (Cats & Dogs) in your area or in the area where your device is hooked.
    3. The Cell Tower is Overloaded / Heavy Traffic (Telecommunication)
    4. You've misunderstood your signal strength
    5. You are moving and the signal weakens while changing from one tower to another
  8. Other culprits may include the following:
    1. Bad Weather: Precipitation can leak into phone cable lines and cause disruptions. Lightening, even at a distance, can disrupt the connection.
    2. Wireless interference: Power lines, radio, or television. transmitters, transformers, and other electronic devices may cause noise on the phone line. --> Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless ...
    3. DSL services: The high-frequency signals coming from DSL (digital subscriber line) devices sharing the phone line can create problems for other technology connected to the line.
  9. Try to turn on Airplane mode, wait for 10-15 secs, and turn off airplane mode.
  10. Check the health of your device's Battery. Change if below 80%
  11. Take the SIM out and Put it back again, Change your SIM, if it is damaged
  12. Time to contact your Carrier / Change if required

Solved, but phone sold.

After trying all the suggestions without results, and even after resetting the phone without results, I believe the issue was resolved after changing a setting where Siri could end calls with voice. I remember turning this on when it came in an update or something, but never really tried it. Turned it off and then I don't remember having the issue, but I'm not completely sure, since I had already purchased a Galaxy S23 exchanging the iPhone, and this was in the brief waiting period until the new phone arrived.

I have the same problem.

If any of these was the issue, a headset wouldn't solve the problem.

All of my calls drop randomly, doesn't depend on location or weather. All places that were previously fine are now affected. It is not a carrier or sim card issue, as calls are not dropped on an android phone when I tested.

Interestingly, when I used a headset, it is fine. (Bluetooth - beats flex in my case).

It's not a proximity sensor issue (i suspected if it is the screen gets randomly on and my ears touch the hang up button, but no) as the calls are not dropped like hanging up a call. There's a 2 or 3 seconds silence that even the other person in the call now recognises, after which the call is dropped. It is a repeating pattern.

I have been having the exact same thing. I have an iPhone about 3 years old. 2 months ago it started dropping calls over and over when calling on the phone. I have tried so many things and no change. I’ve checked my network settings, and the help person for the network had to call me back 5 times!!! It’s not rain, weather, service or network issues. All I have noticed is if I want my call to last longer than a minute I have to use AirPods. It doesn’t do it with the aipods! Why??? What is going on!? I cannot have my iPods in all the time!

Apple should be able to explain or investigate but no, our phone is out of warranty. they prefer us to buy a new phone. Calls drop (does not actually drop completely but more like bad phone signals, so the conversation will fade in and out and it is very annoying to have a conversation like this). Initially, I thought it was due the bad coverage area but how can it be when it happening everywhere. Also I have new issues like I set my iPhone to ring, the phone will randomly turn off ring and goes on silent mode.. Very annoying as I get missed calls because of that. On the using of head phones, or ear piece, the phone conversation gets better, the drops are still there but not as bad. So if the calls can be improved or enhanced by the use of head phone or Bluetooth ear piece, - are the antenna or the speaker compromised? i wish that Apple can take note and let us know. There is no point for me to replace the antenna or the speakers if I don't really know what the issues are.. The service will be happy to take my money and put in new antenna or speaker...

I have had the same issue since more than a year -iPhone 11 - initially I thought the signal from provider might be patchy - but it seems that regardless of location - the problem persists and not great to make or receive calls - I reset my phone once and it solved the problem for a short while - in making calls, it also takes a while to dial. Also when I make a call, internet seems to be down and back up again after a call. Other issue I have is my ringer likes to go off or goes on silent by its own - very annoying as I get missed calls as a result .
