Clamshell mode with an external display only works when the Mac is connected to power. There are no work arounds. Why it must be that way is anyone's guess.

AFAIK, yes. but I only started researching this very recently and haven't had the time to test out how it all works yet. once I test it (maybe tomorrow) I'll post back here.
