Beats Studio 3 Headphones

Hi, my headphones have just fallen apart. The right one in particular after a piece of plastic came away from the arm. Also, the soft material of both ear muffs are peeling off. Is this normal? It’s very disappointing, as they have been going well until now.

The ear muff self-destructing is unfortunately normal. The so-called "protein leather" or plastic used to make the pad soft and nice to wear seems to decay in 3-4 years, probably through natural oxidation. What's a bit more vexing is that replacements are fairly hard to find at normal retailers. I did replace some Sennheiser pads with some velvet fabric type bought probably from China which appear to last a lot better.

I bought a pair of replacement muffs off eBay and while they were reasonably priced and good enough, fitting wasn't exactly easy. The original pads are glued on with double sided tape in a way that suggests that they're not really intended for replacement. Certainly Bose, Sennheiser and other headphones I have used have pads which are easy to replace.

Overall, this has been a disappointing experience. While the Beats are nice enough to look at and fairly comfortable, there are other cans with better sound quality, better noise reduction and where the manufacturer appears to care a bit more about the customer and sustainability.

What's slightly more vexing that the ear muff or pad decaying is the fact that Apple and Beats don't have spare parts listed anywhere - cables, cases, muffs etc. and contacting support offered nothing. The muffs are a consumable not a repair part and should be as available from Beats or Apple as the similar thing is from the Bose website where replacements are listed for almost everything. Maybe the Studio 3 is a single use item or you throw them away when the ear muffs fall apart?
