Proximity sensor issue on my iPhone

I'm using iPhone 14 Pro Max. When I receive a voice message in WhatsApp and I put the phone to my ear to hear it, the message stops playing, showing no volume icon - a speaker with a diagonal line crossing it.

The same thing happens when I play the message on the speaker, but I put my finger on the proximity sensor. That's why I think it's the sensor. People with older iPhones have no problem hearing the messages close to their ears.

Is there something that can be done?

Hi VanyaT,

You are correct, the Proximity sensor should sense when you have the iPhone up to your ear, and then dim.

However, you'll want to isolate the issue, to determine if the issue is only related to the third-party app, WhatsApp, or the iPhone itself.

Here's how:

1. Make a call using the Apple Phone app

2. Hold the iPhone up to your ear to listen through the receiver

3. Move away slightly, so you can see if it's dim. Using a mirror can help.

If the issue is only happening with the WhatsApp app, then you'll want to contact the app developer:How to contact an app developer - Apple Support

If the issue happened when using the Phone app also, you'll need to have your iPhone looked at by a technician. This page has the info needed to set that up: iPhone Repair & Service - Apple Support

Take care!
