Question about power adapters

A few months ago I had to replace my old MacBook Air -13” – Early 2015,

got a MacBook Air – Retina- 13” – 2020, all good.

The new one is 87w with the removable cable with USB-C on both ends.

The old one uses the 45w Mag Safe 2, cable attached, magnetic connector to the laptop.

I still use both machines, but don’t like traveling with 2 power adapters.

I have an old cord with USB-C – could I cut off the MagSafe 2 and splice the magnetic end on to a USB-C, use the 87w adapter on the old MacBook Air?

Thanks

DS
