Apple Watch 3's erratic swim lap counting

My Apple Watch 3 recently has become inconsistent in correctly counting swim laps. It seems to happen when another swimmer has joined my lane. Is it a problem with whatever gear she's using (bluetooth radio, another watch, etc.), causing interference? If so, what are my options?

When you start a Pool Swim workout, be sure to accurately set the pool length to help your Apple Watch measure laps and distance. GPS isn't used during a Pool Swim, and water might prevent a heart-rate measurement, but calories, laps, and distance will still be tracked using the built-in accelerometer.

So I don't see how another swimmer can be causing any interference. Maybe with another swimmer in the lane you are not maintaining a constant enough speed and therefor the accelerometer is not tracking correctly. Just a guess.

Thank you. But I've been using the watch counter for four years with no problems, doing all you suggest. This is a new development, in just the last week. The counter is acting erratic -- adding varied nonsensical times to the "rest" period under the Auto Sets, and under Splits it is inventing unbelievable times for each 25 yard length. So if this isn't caused by GPS interference, then it's gone wacko. I have reset the watch several times. I have no idea what to do. Any helpful suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
