My school has promethean interactive boards installed in every classroom. I'd like to project the textbook and see another file, namely the key to the textbook, on my screen. Only using an Ipad. Is it possible and if so, how? TIA

No that would not be possible. When you mirror the screen of an iPad, it is just going to create a "mirror image" of whatever is on the screen to the display you're connected to. The device and software does not currently have the capability to run an app on an external display while you're doing something different on the screen of the iPad.
