Handwritten text gets jiggly when I touch it with Apple Pencil

I cannot really explain what’s happening by text but I am adding a YouTube link to the video of the issue occuring. I recently got this iPad Pro 11” M2 and this issue happens when I’m using my Apple Pencil in CollaNotes. I would like to know if this is a software or device related problem.https://youtu.be/8zg_jawkH5g

Okay, so I checked possibly everything and here are the outcomes.

1 - It definitely happens quite noticeably in CollaNotes as the first video shows.

2 - It happens in Apple Notes as well, although less noticeably. When you write longer stuff it becomes more noticeable. Here is the video of it happening: https://youtu.be/7JrxpsIlaD8

3 - It does not seem to happen in GoodNotes, so I’m assuming it might be a software issue; although it is weird the exact same thing happens in Apple’s own app as well. Here is a video from GoodNotes: https://youtu.be/UhIVhKHLg0M

4 - I tried unpairing and pairing again the Apple Pencil. The problem occurs when I write with my finger and not with the Apple Pencil as well, so I think it is not related with Apple Pencil.

5 - I am using the display in "More Space" mode. When I tried to switch to the "Standard" mode, both black tint and jiggling issues have gone away.

Overall, the issue seems to be related with the software, specifically with the "More Space" display mode and Apple Pencil Kit or the handwriting frameworks in these apps not working well. GoodNotes seems to be doing fine in either case.

Hey icssocials,

To clarify, does this only happen in CollaNotes? How about the Apple Notes app or other apps with Apple Pencil support.

If it's only that specific app, it's likely software related and related to their app specifically. Ensure it's fully updated, and then check with the app developer regarding the issue.

If it does happen in other apps, try unpairing and re-pairing your Apple Pencil as outlined below:

"If your Apple Pencil won't pair with your iPad

  1. Connect your Apple Pencil to your ipad:
    • With Apple Pencil (2nd generation): Center your Apple Pencil on the magnetic connector, which is on the side of your iPad with the volume buttons.
    • With Apple Pencil (1st generation) and iPad (6th through 9th generations): Remove the cap and plug your Apple Pencil into the Lightning connector on your iPad.
    • With Apple Pencil (1st generation) and iPad (10th generation): Remove the cap and plug your Apple Pencil and a USB-C cable into the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter. Plug the other end of the cable into your iPad.
  1. Restart your iPad, then try to pair again.
  2. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure that Bluetooth is turned on.
  3. On the same screen, find your Apple Pencil under My Devices. If you find it, tap Information icon. Then tap Forget this Device.
  4. Connect your Apple Pencil into your iPad and tap the Pair button when it appears after a few seconds.
  5. If the Pair button doesn't appear, wait for one minute while your Apple Pencil charges. Then try connecting your Apple Pencil again and wait until the Pair button appears.
  6. If the Pair button still doesn't appear, contact Apple Support."

Cheers!

Hey,

Whenever I use Apple Notes, the moment I “hover” the Apple Pencil on the screen (when the dot appears at the tip of the pen), there appears a black tint around the note. I tried to screenshot/screen-record it but the tint does not appear in those, so I added an external picture of it happening (it disappears the moment I screenshot and comes back as it’s done; it does not appear at all during screen-recording) The same thing happens when I draw with my finger as well. I tested it with a friend of mine who owns the 12.9 version but neither of these two problems happened with her device.

Also, the issue with CollaNotes does not happen immediately. It usually takes a bit of writing for it to be noticeable. I am not sure if it’s about the device’s temperature increasing or completely the software causing the problem. I am waiting for iPadOS 16.5 for the Apple Notes issue to be possibly fixed and I have contacted the developer about the CollaNotes issue.

Hello icssocials,

In that image when you say there's a "black tint around the note" are you talking about the black dot under the pencil tip? If you are, and you want to turn that off go to Settings > Apple Pencil, and turn off Show Effects when using Pencil.

The other iPad you tested, is that one also an M2 processor model, or is it using an older processor? Only the M2 processor models have the capability of showing the hover dot. If it is an M2 processor model, do they have the "Show Effects when using Pencil" option in Settings > Apple Pencil, turned off?

Use Apple Pencil with your iPad

Cheers!
