My watch8 keeps locking

My watch8 is 7 days old. And it keeps locking while I wear it. I tried rebooting the watch & phone. I have tried turning on and off the wrist detection. I even went to the Apple Store today and they did an Unpair and Pair of my watch & phone. Approximately 1 hour and 45mins later.... my watch locked on my wrist while I was working on my computer. It locked a 2nd time 15mins later as I was walking up the stairs. I have an intermittent problem. How do we fix this?? This is very annoying! And choosing to disable passcode is not the answer because I can't use some features by doing so. Need a fix ASAP

The Unpair/Pair routine should have cleared any software or settings issues. That seems to leave two options.

  • Check you are wearing the watch with the band (watch strap) fitting it correctly to your wrist. See the description in Wearing your Apple Watch - Apple Support
  • A possible hardware defect. I will simply remind you that Apple's standard return/refund policy is 14 days. This would allow you to reject a defective device and purchase again (in theory) but it is more likely a call to Apple Support and a repeat visit to the Apple Store will get a problem device swapped out. If you already started a support case they should be able to go back to the notes from your first visit and see the attempted fix did not work.

UPDATE: Decided to adjust the position of my watch on my wrist... slightly higher than where I normally wear it. It has been 7 hrs and no locking while wearing my. I wore the Series4 watch a bit lower than this with no problems for 4 years. TODAY... I am just slightly higher... enough for my watch to find "new skin" to connect with I guess. And it's working. I HAVE NO CLUE! But something must be different on my wrist going from Series4 to Series8
