YubiKey with USB-C is not recognized on my MacBook Air

I am trying to register two YubiKey 5C NFC keys with USB-C plug-ins. The key lights up when I insert it into the USB-C port of my MacBook Air M2 2022, but tapping does nothing. I have already used the first key successfully with Google.

what worked for me was -

Download the yubi manager app from their site.

Start it.

Put in my Yubi key. (which it saw)

Go to "Interfaces" and check all the interfaces.

After that everything worked.

Excerpt from Yubico:

Is the YubiKey seen by your Operating System?

Please check that YubiKey OTP+FIDO+CCID or similar appears in one of the following locations when the key is inserted. The YubiKey Bio will appear here as YubiKey FIDO, and our Security Keys will show as "Security Key by Yubico". Bluetooth & other devices.

I have a USB C NFC and a USB C Nano Yubikey as the backup. I can't find a way to join my USB C Nano as the secondary key because it isn't recognized by my iPad Pro and I can't plug USB C into my iPhone 13 Pro. The NFC works but it won't finish setup without adding a second key.

The article references a USB-C to Lightning adapter, but Apple doesn't seem to sell one and there are varying reviews on the available ones on Amazon (charging only/data/OTG support). Which adapter will work for a Yubikey 5C?

I'm wondering if there's an issue with either the M2 chip (doubtful) or Mac OS Sonoma 14.4 (perhaps?). I notice that when the Mac tells me to plug the YubiKey in and I do so, there's some kind of dialog box that flashes on the screen for a half-second and disappears. Then when I tap the YubiKey nothing happens other than it stops blinking. I've got a brand new 5 C NFC (two of them so I have a backup). Nothing seems to be working--iCloud, Fastmail, 1Password are all having the same result.
