Issue with unable to locate tracks

Hi. Mac user running Venutura 13.2.1 at present,

I use Music purely as a method of storing and cataloguing audio files. I work in music and have many files sent to me that I drop into Music. The library is stored on an external hard drive. I generally have no issues dropping files straight into Music. However I have an issue whereby when I close Music, and then re-open it, some (but not all) of the albums I have uploaded seem to lose the location for one or more of the tracks, often the first track. So on the Recently Added screen what was one album before closing Music becomes two albums on reopening. Sometimes this also happens without losing the location of a track.

The solution is usually to locate the missing track and re upload it to the correct file (where it had been before closing Music) or sometimes just renaming the album to something different pulls the errant tracks back together again. I can usually fix the issue, but it's reoccurring every time I close Music and extremely annoying. Any ideas? Thanks

Make sure that your external drive is accessible before you launch Music. Make sure to close Music before turning off your computer. Do you have any antivirus software? This can disrupt the way that Music updates its database potentially losing recent changes. Try holding down option as you launch Music and explicitly reselect your library. Music in Catalina or later can maintain a cached copy of the database to support home sharing and syncing when Music isn't running. It is possible that in some cases Music may be connected to this copy in error. You can also try holding down option+cmd as you launch Music which opens in it in its safe mode and may sometimes repair odd issue with the library.
