Use of security keys to protect your AppleID is entirely optional.
If you choose to use them, you should ensure that you have a thought-out disaster recovery strategy to regain access to your AppleID.
You’ll also need to purchase at least 2x keys to begin; the exact type depends somewhat on the hardware you’re running.
They can be purchased from Amazon or other sources.
