Am no expert in this area, yet your question surely deserves a response.

Apple support have articles online that may help trouble-shoot :

Eg: You may need to update your iPhone's iOS version to the latest.

About iOS 16 Updates - Apple Support (says iOS 16.4.1)

That way the firmware on the AirPods will automatically update also, when paired: About firmware updates for AirPods - Apple Support

You might want to restart the device you are using for phone calls ..

Eg: How to: Restart your iPhone

You might want to check you have not accidentally turned on "Silent" mode or "mute",

and

try experimenting with the volume during a call.

Eg: How to put your iPhone on vibrate, ring, or silent mode - Apple Support

or

While on a call on iPhone – Apple Support

says:

"Adjust the audio during a call

To change the volume, press the volume buttons on the side of iPhone.

Or

swipe down on the call banner, ....... then

Mute: Tap the mute button."
