I also found the following from https://www.apple.com/macos/sonoma/pdf/macOS_All_New_Features.PDF

Passkeys for Apple ID on the web.
Use a passkey when signing in with your Apple ID on the web.
Both of those are for the released versions.
I do find it strange that there isn't more information promoting its use.
See the following Apple Support article for information on using a security key for your Apple ID: About Security Keys for Apple ID - Apple Support
Note that you still need to use your Apple ID password. The security key is a second factor in two-factor authentication.

Yes, I did misunderstand. My answer was about security keys.
I don't know much (anything?) about passkeys but don't think they can be used to sign into your Apple ID or any Apple website such as this forum or iCloud.com or https://appleid.apple.com/
You've probably already seen the following, but just in case: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213305
and

The only thing I can find from Apple that specifically refers to passkeys with an Apple ID is the following paragraph from About the security of passkeys - Apple Support
(underline added by me)
Protections on accessing Apple ID account
To protect against unauthorized access, any Apple ID using iCloud Keychain requires two-factor authentication. If a user attempts to register a new passkey and does not have two-factor authentication set up, they will be automatically prompted to set up two-factor authentication.
To sign in for the first time on any new device, two pieces of information are required—the Apple ID password and a six-digit verification code that's displayed on the user's trusted devices or sent to a trusted phone number.
It never happened, was dropped before public release.
Thank You, I appreciate your quick response.
I think I may have misled you, I was thinking of the latest security system of "Passwordless login with passkeys" currently being introduced by Apple, Google, Microsoft etc.
This new system appears to be very secure and does not rely on password (which I have had some problems with recently.)
Since Apple is a prime developer of this technology, I thought they might use it in Apple ID instead of a password.
Anyway, I thank you for your help, Good Day
No, I have never used a beta version on any Apple device. It was released to the general public (at least I think it was since I can use it).
My devices have Touch ID so I rarely have any visible indication that a passkey is being used.
Using Safari, if I sign out of this forum and then sign in again and click Cancel on the window that has Touch ID prompt, it will then go to the non-Touch ID sign in routine and after entering Apple ID it will give the option to sign in with password or passkey.
This feature will be introduced only with the new iPadOS17, iOS17, MacOS Sonoma
I have not yet seen any knowledge base article to support it as release day is not yet here.
So can I. AFAIK it was never released to the public. Guessing, like me, you beta tested ios17?? In which case, yes, we can.
