iphone 6 battery suddenly drops to 1%

Started having the problem where in the morning, the phone will be on 1%. Happened 3 nights in a row. Looking at the battery activity, it goes from mid-80’s to 1% almost instantly.

Last night, I switched the phone off at 85% power and switched on in the morning. Power was still 85% though dropped a couple of points quite quickly, 78%. After 30 minutes, checked the phone and it was on 1%. Grabbed a screen shot of the battery activity showing it plummeting to 1%.

Powered off and back on without charging and it was at 78%. Kept checking and was able to see battery go from 78% to 1% before my eyes and come up with low power dialog box.

Powered off and on again and it was now at 71%.

First shot is over night where it drops around midnight.

Second shot is where powered off over night, switched on then drops to 1%, powered off and on again with no charging inbetween.

Anybody got any ideas of why this should start happening and what to do to fix it?

I am not an intensive user and do not have a lot of apps, certainly not much running in the background. Only other thing that has happened recently was iOS upgrade to 15.7.5

Earlier iPhone models

Update - it is actually an iPhone 7 and 3 years old. Battery health is at 86%. Has dropped to 1% several times today and after rebooting, shows at close to what it was before it suddenly drops. Can go for several hours of doing nothing, then bamm, drops to 1%.

Did not think would need to change a battery after only 3 years of light use. My wife has the same model phone with battery health of 85% and no problems.

Suspect that there must be an internal fault with the battery.

That battery is pretty clearly failing.

You can choose to replace the battery, or to replace the iPhone.

iPhone 7 is supported on iOS 15, and no later. Current is iOS 16.
