WiFi settings on A1354

Don't over think this. Just set up the "remote" AirPort Extreme as a new device. AirPort Utility will literally configure the second AirPort for you correctly and automatically.

Connect an Ethernet cable from the "main" AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the remote AirPort Extreme

Power up the remote AirPort and let it run for a minute

Hold in the reset button on the back of the remote AirPort for 7-8 seconds and release

Allow a full minute for the remote AirPort to restart to a slow blinking amber light status

On your Mac.......open AirPort Utility (Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility)

Click on the Other Wi-Fi Devices button

Click on AirPort Extreme xxxxxxx

AirPort Utility will take a few seconds to analyze the network and then suggest the correct setup. Things will look similar to the example below, except that you will see your devices displayed

Type in a device name that you want to call the remote AirPort

Click Next

The next window will similar to the example below:

Wait a minute for the setup to complete, then things will look like this:

You are done. You don't have to worry about stuff like "Bridge Mode". The setup utility will configure the remote AirPort Extreme for you automatically with the correct settings.

Initially I was going to use my Airport Express in place of a non working Airport Extreme, but I found an Airport Extreme online and used that as the remote unit in my garage. All is well there.

So I want to extend my network in my home with the Airport Express but for some reason it does not fully boot up.

This is how I have been trying to get it to go.

The Express is plugged in. I then depress the reset until it starts flashing quickly. When I see it mount on my

computer in the Airport utility under "other wi-fi devices" I click on it and fill in the following under the Wireless tab Network Mode:"Extend a wireless network"

Wireless Network Name:My Network

Wireless Security: WPA Personal

All looks good until the it comes up in the Airport Utility, then it starts to blink orange. I've done this numerous times

with the same result.

Use your computer to set up the AirPort in the house and set it to bridge mode (which is Router Mode: off) with the AirPort Utility.

Pull the ethernet to the second AirPort in the garage then hook it up and use the AirPort Utility to set the wifi network up. The AirPort Utility should be able to see the garage router once its on the ethernet and the house router is bridged. (Have only the house a1354 bridged.) The house router will hand off the traffic from the garage router to your modem w/o address conflicts.

Also, you can just use a short ethernet cable run from the iMac and set the wifi networks for each with the AirPort Utility, then bridge the house router and trot the second unit to the garage and plug it in. Don't over think it. Just do. It will work.

Click on the AirPort Express and a smaller window will appear with information about the Express

Look for status

Click on the small amber dot there and an info message will appear

What is the message?

Power off all of the AirPorts on your network

Wait a minute

Power up the "main" AirPort Extreme and let it run a minute

Move the Express close to the AirPort Extreme temporarily.

Now power up only the AirPort Express. Leave the other AirPorts powered off for now.

Reset the Express again and set it up again.

What happens?

If the Express is OK now, power up the other AirPorts and move the Express back to its normal location
